International Volunteer Day: how your brain decides between donating time and money

In case you didn’t know, today (December 5) is International Volunteer Day. Now, you might wonder whether you should donate some of your free time to charity or whether you can get away with a monetary donation. How do you actually decide between such distinct pro-social acts? After all, how much you enjoy spending some time in the animal shelter is hard to compare to how much you like donating money to a local charity. Neuroeconomic research provides some very relevant insights and shows that this can all be traced back to the same brain area. Would a neural currency for valuation truly exist?
